INTRO
Tomás Delft (b. 1993) is a Portuguese-Belgian artist and designer whose practice explores memory, perception and the transformation of lived experience.
His work begins with memories, personal, collective and imagined, and with the fragments that remain from them. Images, sensations, places, objects and experiences are reinterpreted through a process of abstraction, reconstruction and distortion. Rather than representing a memory as something fixed, Delft explores it as something unstable: continuously altered by time, emotion and perception.
Working across painting, photography, installation and other visual forms, he experiments with materials, techniques and processes to translate these ideas into physical and visual experiences. Raw surfaces, textures, marks, layers, erosion, colour and unexpected material reactions become part of the work, allowing the process itself to influence the final outcome.
There is an ongoing tension between control and chance within his practice. Structured forms and deliberate compositions coexist with accidents, imperfections and transformations produced by the materials. Each technique becomes a way of questioning how something is remembered, reconstructed and ultimately given a new form.
Delft is interested in the space between what was experienced and what remains, between reality and recollection, presence and absence, clarity and fragmentation. His works do not seek to reconstruct specific memories, but to create spaces in which memory can be felt, interpreted and projected onto.
Alongside his artistic practice, Delft has worked for more than a decade in branding and visual communication, developing identities and creative projects internationally. This background informs his approach through an interest in visual language, composition, symbolism and the relationship between image and meaning.
His practice is ultimately an exploration of how memory changes what we see, and how what we remember can be transformed into something new.
